A Girl Within a Girl Within a Girl begins on an ordinary morning in an upscale Atlanta suburb, when Maya's husband drops a letter on the counter and asks a devastating question: who is Sunny? The letter, from a sister no one in Maya's life knows she has, sends her spiralling back to her childhood in 1980s Guyana and the traumatic journey to America that forced her to leave everything behind, including her name, her family, and every version of herself she had ever been. A dual-timeline story of identity, survival, and the secrets we bury to keep ourselves safe.

My Review

I listened to this as an audiobook thanks to @librofm, and the performance was outstanding—truly brought every layer of the story to life. Thank you so much for the ALC LibroFM!

This novel begins with Maya, a woman in the U.S. who receives a letter from her estranged sister—news that forces her to finally confront the past she’s buried for years. What unfolds is a layered, gorgeously written coming-of-age story that moves between timelines and identities, from Maya’s current life back to her childhood in Guyana, where she was known as Sunita—“Sunny”—and later, in the U.S., as Neena.

At just 12 years old, Sunny is living a typical life in Guyana, full of dreams and family hopes of a better future in America. When an opportunity arises for her to go first and help support the family, it feels like a miracle. But that miracle quickly twists into something much darker and more complex. The reality she finds in the U.S. is nothing like what was promised. Instead of safety and opportunity, she faces cruelty, loneliness, and a complete erasure of her identity.

This story is about so much more than immigration or chasing the American Dream. It’s about identity—how it’s stripped, re-formed, and reclaimed. It’s about a young girl with no say in the choices made for her, who believes—wrongly but understandably—that her suffering is her own fault. And it’s about how she eventually finds her voice, her strength, and her path forward.

The structure of this novel is masterful. The parts are labeled by each of her identities—Sunita, Neena, Maya—and we get glimpses of Maya’s present life throughout, tying everything together in a way that feels seamless and emotionally resonant.

It’s also the first book I’ve read with a Guyanese protagonist, and I found myself eagerly Googling things as I read—one of my favorite parts of reading is learning, and this novel delivered that in spades.

Yes, it’s a hard read. But it’s also a necessary one. And a beautiful one. The last quarter flew by for me—too quickly, if I’m being honest, only because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Sunny/Maya/Neena.

This is the kind of book I want to press into people’s hands. A Girl Within a Girl Within a Girl would be an excellent pick for book clubs—there’s so much to unpack and discuss. Nanda Reddy is an author to watch. What a remarkable debut.
