The Ferryman and His Wife follows Nils Vik, who wakes on November the 18th knowing it will be the day he dies. He follows his morning routine one last time, steps onto his beloved boat, and sets off along the fjord. As he travels his familiar route, the dead begin to board, former passengers emerging from the woods and the ferry stops, accompanied by his dog who has been gone for years. Nils waits for one passenger above all others: his late wife, Marta.

Nils Vik wakes on the morning he knows will be his last, moves through his familiar routine, and steps onto the boat that shaped the whole arc of his life. What follows is a quiet, haunting drift through memory as the dead from his past join him one by one, from his long-gone dog to the people who once crossed his ferry. They come out of the woods, out of the water, even out of his old logbook, nudging him to notice things he had missed and to sit with the moments that made him who he is. All the while he keeps his heart fixed on one hope, that Marta will find her way back to him on this final crossing.
You would think a story built around a man preparing for death might weigh heavy, but Grytten turns it into something warm and incredibly tender. Nils looks back on decades of carrying people between city and countryside, watching families split apart or knit back together, witnessing the small changes and quiet triumphs that never make headlines. He is no larger than life hero, just a gentle man who tried to offer kindness where he could. The book moves through his memories in a loose, drifting way, more like following the current than reading a tightly plotted story, and that wandering rhythm feels true to the way Nils himself understands his life.
What struck me most was how calm the writing feels even when it brushes against sorrow or hardship. It never leans into drama, which somehow makes the emotional moments land even more sharply. Nils is flawed and deeply human, shaped by his landscape and his roots, and Grytten paints all of that with steady, confident strokes. By the time the story glides into its final scene, the ending feels exactly right, gentle and luminous. A beautiful book and an easy five stars.
