This book is everything I crave in a thriller and then some. I started with the ebook, but after my Kindle formatting went a little wonky, I switched to the audiobook and best decision ever. The audio performance is phenomenal and elevates the tension to a whole new level.
This story has everything: A quiet lake resort. A double murder. A missing teenage niece. And a main character thrown straight into the center of a nightmare.

What was supposed to be a peaceful family vacation in the Northwoods of Wisconsin transforms into a chilling descent into secrets, lies, and danger. As police swarm the once-serene resort town, layers of hidden family truths and disturbing local history come to light, leaving Courtney and the reader constantly questioning who can be trusted.
The atmosphere in this book is unbelievably haunting. More than once, I jumped at the sound of a door opening in my own house. Mary Kubica’s writing is so evocative that I felt like I was standing in that dark hallway, hearing footsteps behind me, bracing for the next reveal. The eerie wooded setting, the ghastly cabin scene, the quiet moments that hit harder than the loud ones. It all creates a suffocating, tension-filled reading experience. My heart was racing so often that I’m convinced it should count as cardio.
The blend of psychological suspense, true crime vibes, and a slow-burn police procedural makes this book impossible to put down. Every chapter unravels a new secret, every clue complicates the truth, and just when you think you’ve figured it out Kubica hits you with another twist that knocks the breath out of you. Those twists? Absolutely mind-blowing.
This was my first Mary Kubica novel, and it will absolutely not be my last. I loved the pacing, the emotional depth, the intricate plotting, and most of all, the claustrophobic atmosphere that lingered long after I finished the final chapter. If you love intense, atmospheric thrillers packed with shocking turns and unforgettable dread, It’s Not Her deserves a spot at the very top of your TBR.
