Thank you so much to Sourcebooks Landmark for the copy of this book!

This book is a never-before-told story of history’s fiercest heroines and the rise of the Amazons. At fourteen, Otrera steps into marriage expecting love and partnership, only to find herself trapped in abuse and destitution. Through her suffering, she realizes the harsh truth of her world: freedom and respect are not granted to women. They must be seized. Rallying those around her, Otrera takes a stand, forging a path for herself and other women, showing that liberation is bought with courage, resolve, and sometimes blood.

The heart of the story lies in the matriarchal community Otrera discovers, led by the wise Phile. Here, she learns self-sufficiency, strength, and leadership, surrounded by women who have endured the same oppression. Otrera’s journey is not without flaws. Her moments of arrogance and the need to “prove herself” make her feel real and human. These challenges are addressed in her growth, reinforcing the themes of perseverance, empowerment, and the complexity of leadership.

This book is a raw, moving portrait of women living under a patriarchal system that treated them as property, beaten down by abusive husbands, yet capable of immense resilience. The story is both inspiring and motivating, especially for those drawn to feminist narratives and tales of self-discovery. A special mention goes to the horses, who add unexpected warmth and depth. If you’ve ever wondered how the Amazons came to be, or simply want a story of women reclaiming their strength and identity, this retelling will stay with you long after the final page.
